ReleaseKoto desktop — the alpha test is open
The Windows app is available to download: installer and portable version. It's an early alpha — here's what already works and what comes next.
Two ways to install
You can download Koto from the Download page in two ways. The regular installer sets it up like any program: a Start-menu shortcut, auto-updates, everything configured for you in about a minute. The portable version needs no installation — unzip it into a folder, run it, and its data sits right next to the app.
It's the same app either way — pick what suits you. The installer is handy if you want to set it and forget it. The portable version is for carrying the messenger on a USB stick, or keeping it without leaving traces in the system.
What already works
Private chats are protected with end-to-end encryption. You sign in with a 12-word secret phrase instead of a phone number. Bots and built-in mini-apps that open right inside a chat are already available.
The app updates itself: when a new version ships, an “Update” button appears right in the window — one click downloads and installs the patch. Light and dark themes work out of the box and follow your system setting.
Privacy by default
No phone number, no SMS, no ad tracking. Your account is a key kept only on your device; we don't store your messages in readable form and don't share them with third parties.
Encryption is the same for everyone — there's no “lite” mode that's less protected. It isn't a checkbox in settings; it's how the app is built underneath.
It's an alpha — what to keep in mind
This is an early version: some things may not work perfectly, and some features are still in development. For now, don't keep your only copy of truly important data in Koto — we're improving it constantly.
Try it and tell us what you liked and what we should fix — every piece of feedback brings the stable release closer. Mobile apps and the web version are already in the works and next in line.
